Here in Arusha we provide an education centre that is different from others. We fill a gap in the education system, for young people who have had minimal schooling (most leaving at Primary level), but who aspire to something more. Many have dreams of becoming teachers, lawyers or owning their own business, but without help, they will never be able to achieve this. At The Umoja Centre we offer a year long course which will enable them to learn vital skills while at the same time expand their knowledge on issues that affect them and the world.
As part of their Personal Development and Civics courses the students will be running campaigns in their own communities about issues such as the environment and HIV/AIDS. They will have full support and resources from the centre to carry out these projects.
In addition to the following subjects students are involved in a variety of creative and community activities. Each year Umoja students participate in a two week Arts Workshop, run by a group of students from the Juilliard School, New York, under the auspices of the Arusha Arts Initiative. The workshop includes drama, dance and music and aims to build confidence and self awareness.
