The Umoja Centre

Out Placement

At Umoja we believe that education is a vital tool in the fight against poverty. Our mission is not just to give our students a year of free education – but to see them move on to ‘the next step’. This next step could be secondary education, college, vocational education (such as ‘on-the-job’ training or career specific studies) or meaningful employment/self-employment.

We achieve this goal through mentoring and support both during the course and after the students graduate.

So that our supporters can follow the progress of our graduate students on our 'Out Placement Scheme' we have added a new page to update you on our progress!

To visit the new page click here or follow the links from 'Our Students' in the menu on the left.

Volunteer Teachers urgently needed!

We urgently need qualified teachers to volunteer with us!

Do you, or someone you know, have the skills we are looking for? You would be joining a small, friendly staff and would be responsible for developing curricula & teaching resources and delivering teacher training & mentoring.

Get the full information from our volunteering page.

Hot off the Press!

The very first edition of our centre 'newspaper' is now available to download from this website!

Fourteen of our dedicated students, who have been attending the extra-curricular 'Newspaper Club' in their own time before and after lessons, have produced a topical 'broadsheet' and we are very proud to show off their work! It is entirely the students' own words and so the English is obviously not perfect, but they have more than made up for it with investigative flair and tenacious interview techniques!

Cornish 'Camel Trail' Fundraiser

On the 4th August Thomas Knight completed a gruelling cycle ride along ‘The Camel Trail’ from Padstow to Bodmin and back - not just once, but three times, totalling 72 miles!

Tom completed this challenge to raise money for The Umoja Centre – a cause which he passionately believes in. “In the midst of the economic depression, it’s really easy to forget that there are still people out there in the world in far worse situations than ourselves” said Tom – who celebrated finishing his cycle with a well deserved bag of Fish and Chips!

Tom rose over £200 and we would like to say - well done and thank you so much!

If you feel inspired by Tom’s challenge and would also like to help us fundraise for The Umoja Centre, click here.

Become a volunteer

The Umoja Centre is always looking for skilled volunteers. If you have a skill to share please contact us to discuss how and when you can help.

At the moment we are particularly keen to hear from teachers of English or Computer Skills, there is also plenty of work to do in the office.

Umoja overseas

There are Umoja charities registered in the UK and Australia who are committed to raising funds for the Umoja Centre.
