UMOJA TANZANIA
Umoja Tanzania Incorporated is a registered NGO in Tanzania and is responsible for managing the day to day running of The Umoja Centre and programme development. The Centre is run by a minimal number of permanent staff with the help of long and short term volunteers. All board members are voluntary. Umoja Tanzania provides financial and annual reports and updates to both Umoja UK and Umoja Australia. (Registration No: 00NGO/00003335)
Caroline Goody ~ Co-Founder and Programme Manager

Originally from Shropshire, UK, Caroline emigrated with her family to Adelaide, Australia where she completed her education. She spent the next ten years working for several charities in England. Having returned to university as a mature student studying International Development she then became involved with post Tsunami relief work in Sri Lanka.
Having co-founded the Umoja centre , Caroline has been in Arusha for over two years. She is much loved and admired by the staff and students, having guided the centre from its inception, enabling us to overcome the many difficulties that beset a young charity such as ours, constantly striving to raise funds and increase the impact that we have on the lives of poverty stricken young adults and the communities that they are from.
Joseph Mangomesi ~ English and Key Skills Teacher
Joseph has had three years teaching experience, teaching both English and Social Studies. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa and an International Certificate in English from City and Guilds, London. He also has attended short courses on Counselling and Sexuality. Joseph has extensive volunteering experience, working with HIV/AIDS sufferers in their homes in some of the poorest slum areas of Arusha. This work involved providing counselling and administering financial support.
“Doing voluntary work has helped me to see the value in people over and above money. It has nurtured my spirit of compassion and service to those who really need my help.”
Gerald Mkemangwa ~ Administration Assistant
Gerry is one of our graduates from the '09 group. His ambition is to become a safari tour guide eventually - a notoriously difficult industry to break into (it is an ambition shared by many, many young people in the Arusha area). In the interim Umoja has offered him employment as a librarian, filing clerk and general assistant. He is paid a decent wage and enjoys favourable working conditions and all the staff and volunteers love having him around with his infectious smile and enthusiastic nature!
Rose Mkemangwa ~ 'House Mama'
Rose was previously working in very poor conditions (often working 12 hour days, seven days a week) away from her family, earning approximately $40 (US) a month.
She is now employed by Umoja as a ‘House Mama’ – in charge of staff meals, cleaning etc. She is now paid a far superior wage, with good working conditions that allow her to live full time with her family and enhance her ability to provide for them.
